TAVAS Caboolture Airfield [22-23rd April 2017]

Postby OzBiggles1963 » 17 Apr 2017, 04:38

Hi folks, though nowhere near the spectacle & scope of Omaka [N.Z.] or Avalon Airshow [Oz], this little collection of WW1 planes in my 'back yard' at Caboolture airfield will be quite something to see, & only 5 days away! This is their 2nd Event [I attended the inaugural & much smaller show in 2016] & I will be there on Sunday 23-4-17 for the whole day. And pestering the BE2c for a ride in the back seat, lol.

The WW1 era planes were awesome, the P51 did some incredible low level maneuvers, plus I had a 20min spin early on in an old [1947] Cessna 140...beautiful clear day up topsides! :D

EDIT: Oh, & I met the daughter of Sir Gordon "Bill" Taylor, the man who received a George Cross for repeatedly climbing out the cockpit of the Southern Cross to change the oil in a motor over the Tasman Sea. A new biography has been published in 2015 by biographer Rick Searle ["The Man Who Saved Smithy"].

Nice article SS, & it was a brilliant day with perfect visibility. I have some great photos & much excellent footage of the WW1 planes flying to sort through & edit, but here is just one of the SE5a:

Small but perfect! Loving the FE2B. I'll bet it was a cracking up close event. Did you become a member? You get a free plane.

Incredible, OzB. It really brings one so much closer to history. Makes you a part of it somehow.

Thanks Frecks, I disappear on a plane to Tasmania in about 30mins (lifestyles of the poor & infamous, lol), but when I get back home in 11 days I will have to post a few of the better ones. Got some excellent footage of the WW1 planes in formation flying, probably will upload that to YouTube once I edit here & there.

A free plane, wow! Lol. Looks like a bargain. And yes, the planes were so close you could almost touch them. Stowing away was a bit more difficult though. :D
