No, just deer and coyote... ahem.

From Fred's post up above. His caption entry was about mooses (meese?).

Wombat 'squares' look a bit like this too.

If the photos were taken in England, then both moose and wombat droppings appear unlikely. However, slightly squished horse droppings would have a similar appearance and be more readily available.

It is a bit annoying it is not the burnt remains of some locally gathered firewood, instead of a sack of nutty slack or whatever. Faux fire. Pah.

"Ooh, look," Biggles said, looking over the photos with a magnifying glass. "Sunbathers!"

Two things struck me...the office seems awfully dark...and his three comrades are also nearby,( according to the scene in the book, which does actually happen...magnifying glass and all.)

Original character....the garden shed at Mount Street

Not for the first time did Biggles’ friends wonder,
Since taking the evidence down to the shed,
Why he hadn’t considered the sensible option;
His spacious, bright, comfortable office instead.
~0~
A strange model plane, which young Ginger had fashioned,
Lurked half in the shadows, enhancing the gloom.
A fan, (or propellor?) was balanced on shelving
With old dusty files in the dimly lit room.
~0~
The desk was too small to assemble the jigsaw
Of aerial photos obtained of the Moor;
And Algy and Bertie, squashed next to young Ginger,
Took most of the space on the shed’s wooden floor.
~0~
They watched as he sighed, dropped the glass, eased cramped fingers
And loosened his freshly washed, snow white cravat.
They’d admired, in their youth, Conan Doyle’s Great Detective;
But the thrill of his methods could sometimes fall flat.
~0~
The boys stood in silence for thirty long minutes,
Poised elbow to elbow awaiting his word.
Berating the boss for his choice of location
Would clearly be rude, and unkind and absurd...
~0~
But men, except one, reach the end of endurance;
They shrugged, left their post; seeking warmth, fuel and light;
Then watched, from the flat, sipping tea by the window,
As Biggles, alone, carried on through the night...

"Bertie, get that eyeglass out of your face before it freezes to your skin! Don't you realize we're in Antarctica?"

This scenario is improbable, but so is that snow

“You certainly did that,” replied Biggles grimly. “I’ll buy you an aeroplane one of these days for pulling me out of that scrape.”....The Black Peril

Biggles peered unblinkingly ahead,
And flinched on hearing metal grind and splash.
He’d planned to make young Ginger’s day, instead
He’d turned the youngster’s dreams to dust and ash.
He’d promised his young protege a plane;
Reward for valour shown when paths first crossed.
Young Ginger had awaited one in vain;
And now, despite intent, all hope was lost...
~0~
It started well ( though several decades late)
As Ginger’s gift was craned from ship to shore;
Enclosed within a large well packaged crate.
He’d never known such happiness before.
He prised the case apart with eager haste ;
Excitement filled the dim lit wintry docks.
But sadly in the dark the friends displaced,
Unwittingly, some vital golden chocks.
~0~
An incline ‘twixt the plane and white-capped sea
Decreed that Ginger’s plane would start to roll.
They watched it gain momentum, helplessly
As waves engulfed it...drowned and swallowed whole.
As polystyrene packing beads poured out
Knee high around the woeful group, they knew
The plane had gone for good, no shred of doubt.
A disappointing outcome, through and through.

Oh oh! Life-size cardboard re-creations, which we can photograph ourselves with! Perhaps with the faces cut away, so we can stick our heads through!

The moment right before Biggles' nice clean boiler suit gets begrimed.

White...such a practical colour...

The Choice

He loved his brand new airman’s suit
So bright and white and clean.
With lovely stretchy contrast cuffs
Like untouched snow;
Pristine.
He wore it with his dashing,
Matching,
Freshly washed
Cravat.
He dazzled all who crossed his path.
Now, what could better that?
~0~
No drab and boring
Greys or browns,
No mundane airforce blue.
Instead, the perfect all-in-one
Of sparkling, startling hue.
His friends, he saw,
Were speechless
At his daring
Fashion sense.
This made his purchase
So worthwhile.
A justified expense.
~0~
They kept him at a distance
As they made their way to work.
Quite clearly they were
Over awed.
(A nudge, a hidden smirk.)
He sat aloof,
Alone,
Apart,
And, most of all,
Alert
For any sign of smudge or mark,
And any hint of dirt.
~0~
He would not touch
The papers in the office;
All that ink!
And mindful of
The risk of spills,
Had water (tap)
To drink.
He delegated every task
Involving
Smears or stains.
(Like those investigating crime
Or flying aeroplanes.)
~0~
His sidekicks shrugged
And rolled their eyes,
And hoped this would not last.
Amusement at his new attire
It seemed, was fading fast.
Whilst Biggles sat in splendid
Isolation,
They toiled on.
And even had to
Scrub the chair
Their boss was perched upon.
~o~
Bertie ( being Bertie)
Was the first to make a stand.
A monocle in steely eye,
An open pack in hand.
“Your dedication, dear old lad,
Is admirable, and yet
I wondered if, despite the ash,
You’d like a cigarette?”
Biggles stared, quite horrified.
At what was now at stake
A choice...
A quite momentous choice...
Which only he could make.
~0~
A scant five minutes later
And the scene had
Clearly changed;
The office in a smoky haze
And duties rearranged.
And Biggles crouched
Beneath his plane,
Still clad in garment fair,
As oil and dust and grease prevailed,
And Biggles did not care.
~0~
