“There,” Biggles pointed two seconds later. “They're bundling Algy away and now that guy’s slinging Algy’s phone.”

He flicked through his phone agitatedly. “We need more footage. Can either of you guess which exit they’re headed for? I imagine there’ll be a vehicle close by. “

'They wouldn't want to take a struggling man any further than absolutely necessary,' Biggles muttered. 'There's a service road into the park opposite Mount St. I think they'll have a van there, then straight out onto the road heading to Marble Arch. They could change direction at Grosvenor St. That's their first opportunity to get onto the south bound road. Traffic has the area stuffed with cameras. Let's see what we can pull up.'

The next set of videos and photographs added a few more pieces to the puzzle. Biggles had been right. There was a van waiting on the service Road and Algy could clearly be seen being bunged into it. Biggles flipped through the images, trying to see a number plate.

The Landlord's wife answered the door. The landlord took sleeping pills and wouldn't be rousable for another hour. Ginger showed her the photograph.

Ginger went to consult with Biggles over who he wanted to knock on which door. He wondered why Algy had been grabbed. Was it to do with their case or for some completely different reason.

"I'm going to enlist Gaskin's help," Biggles said, "and although we can't see the number plate of the van, Bertie spotted a dent on the nearside rear wheel arch. I've also asked traffic to try and trace the van's route through traffic cameras."

Bertie answered the flat 'phone "Hello"
silence greeted him
"Hello"
no reply
"Hello" more sharply
*click*
Bertie put the receiver back in the cradle, and looked at it reproachfully. "That's not playing the game, by Jove !"

"That's strange" said Ginger "Put up the caller display, I had a number withheld call on my mobile just before"

The caller ID was withheld on the flat 'phone, too. 'Is someone checking we are here, or is it one of those machines that dials lots of numbers at once but there are only operators to respond a proportion of the calls?' Ginger wondered.

The attempt at call tracing was started. The picture of Jim was sent to Gaskin's department to see if they knew him, with the list of possible addresses and acquaintances for them to visit. 'They're much better at this routine stuff than me,' Biggles pointed out.

Finally he found what he was looking for. A text from Sarah, whoever she was, saying that she finished her shift at the Dorchester at 11 pm , but could only manage 5 minutes as she was picking her mother up from St Pancras station. This arrangement, Biggles gathered from the rest of the text , was to arrange a date for another day.

This explained why she'd left the scene so quickly, but didn't explain why Algy had been kidnapped. Was it a case of being in the wrong place at the wrong time? Biggles arranged for one of Gaskin's men to interview Sarah. He didn't think he could without blushing.

Sarah couldn't throw any light on Algy's disappearance. She was shocked and upset. If she hadn't suggested that rendezvous, she sobbed, Algy wouldn't have been there and he wouldn't have been kidnapped.
