'So why am I the subject of a kitty contract?' Bertie asked again, patiently.
'Major Bigglesworth' said Von Stalhein coldly, 'there are times when I seriously wonder if you were created by the devil just to annoy me.'

"Because you're the Head of the Family, my boy." Gilbert took a very noisy sip of his tea and broke off a piece of cake to eat.

"Most of 'em," Gilbert answered promptly. "The previous incumbents of my position entered everything into a book. It provided endless material for Sermons."

Bertie didn't think that the past transgressions of his forefathers that were fit to mention in a sermon would bother a cat. Certainly nothing racy seemed to have happened since his grandmother's time and he was looking for something since war had broken out.

Gilbert wouldn't tell him. It was only to be shared with the next incumbent of the Parish. Confidentiality and all that.

Bertie worked out that the book should be with the newest incumbent and determined to visit him to look at it.He went back to what Gilbert had said at the start. 'What did you mean when you said you hoped all that nonsense had stopped. What nonsense? What did you do with my father?'

Gilbert shifted a little in his chair. "The nonsense I referred to was the business with the cats. As for your father, we had long talks about it and I merely urged him to try and put an end to the matter. The Bishop was never very keen on perpetuating what appeared to be a.. a long-standing ceremony which had nothing whatsoever to do with Christianity and everything to do with Paganism."

Gilbert looked troubled. 'I followed my bishop's wishes in the matter and did not pass the details of the really very troublingly pagan ceremony on so the whole thing could discretely fall into abeyance. You hadn't been instructed by your father and the latest incumbent hasn't been instructed by me.'

"Oh, absolutely, old top, absolutely," Bertie affirmed, still with an edge to his voice, "but I believe," He ventured a shot in the dark, "it was the first baron, or might have been the bally second, who instructed the church to carry out certain matters?" He stood up, adjusted his eyeglass and looked Gilbert in the eye. "Perhaps the Bishop hasn't done his jolly old homework," He added, in a softer tone. "Not to worry, I'll see the new man and get the jolly old book. Then I might tootle along and see the Bishop myself. Won't do any harm to remind him who's who and all that rot, what?"

Old Gilbert looked very old and very tired. Biggles remembered he'd recently been ill. 'I'm sure that you can go back to your peaceful retirement very shortly,' he suggested. 'Once you have passed on the information that the new incumbent needs it won't be anything to do with you any more.'

"As you wish, my lord," was all he said. Bertie looked down on him for a moment and then around the tiny room.

"I had no bally idea that this cottage was a doll's house," He remarked. "There's another cottage, a bit larger, available not far from the drive, a bit nearer to the path that leads across the meadow to the Church. How'd you fancy that? You needn't do anything. I'll even get 'em to carry you in your chair. What d' you say? You could have the back parlour as a study. Loads of room for bookcases and whatnots. And a new kitchen too," He added, suddenly remembering the sister.
