She also did the best breakfasts in the area which was one of the reasons why Bertie had selected her establishment.

Before having dinner (and an early night) Bertie decided to walk along to the engine shed, to check that the Streak had been in light steam that day, as promised.

It was a lovely evening. Bertie and Alan enjoyed their stroll to the engine shed. Alan thought that the weather would hold fair and they would have a very good Streak the next day.

They entered the shed and looked in amazement at the sight that met their eyes. The Streak had been vandalised.

"We're lucky that's all it is," Alan told him seriously. "We've had paint stripper thrown on before and various bits and pieces either stolen or wrecked."

'Well, I suppose I'd better waffle down to the chemist and buy some nail varnish remover to get the spray paint off,' Bertie sighed. He pulled his phone out and began to track down which chemist was open late.

It took him a few minutes to find the nail varnish remover that contained acetone, but he finally identified a bottle of gel nail varnish remover as containing the appropriate chemical. He picked up a couple of packets of cotton wool pads to apply the stuff and returned to the shed.

He made a mental note to ask the railway's GM to run the CCTV tapes, the cameras might have picked up something.
On the way back, he spotted the GM ahead of him, so sped up to get to him and ask about the CCTV, the GM made a quick phone call, nodded at Bertie "The search is in hand, if we see anything odd,or a stranger about, I'll give you a call, we've got about three days worth to look at ..."

'You won't have to go back that far,' Bertie pointed out. 'She should have been in light steam today. If she'd been decorated then the day crew would have been after you to look at the footage. This was probably done in the last couple of hours.'

The GM also rustled up a couple of volunteers to help Bertie, including one who had done a lot of the painting.
Luckily, the special varnish they had used meant the painted graffiti was easily removed without a trace. But doing so took a lot of care and the acetone in the remover made them all a bit light-headed.

The volunteers discussed whether a guard should be left in the shed overnight to make sure there wasn't a repeat vandalisation. They decided not, but Alan whispered in Bertie's ear that he'd stay and come and fetch him if there was need.

They also checked the carriages for the test train before heading off to the Station Arms for a "pie and a pint" as one of the volunteers put it.

The pies were very tasty. The landlord regularly entered pie making competitions and had a good winning record. Bertie had a steak and kidney pie with mushy peas and thought he'd never tasted better.

After "suitable refreshment" has been consumed, accompanied by the usual tall tales told when enginemen get together, Bertie and the others headed to their respective accommodation. As Bertie passed by the engine shed, Alan told him that everything was OK so far, but as he didn't need to sleep Bertie could get his shut-eye.

Mrs Miggins was impressed with the new boilersuit when she served breakfast, and agreed to produce a packed lunch to match. Bertie checked his watch, he didn't want to be late. In fact, he wanted to be the first of the Streak's crew there.

The Streak was already outside, raising steam, surrounded by the majority of the volunteers from last night's pub expedition and being well polished.
Alan was appreciative of their efforts, and Bertie set to on the cab brass.

They had plenty of time before they needed to move up to the station and find their carriages - which were being cleaned as well.

Finally, everything was ready, the Streak celebrated by blowing off at the safety valves and someone hurriedly put the big injector on to quieten things down.
Bertie looked for their guard and shunter to see about collecting their test train.
