"Most police work is hush-hush until it gets to court," He reminded her. "But as I don't have a clue what I did and Algy won't tell me, I'm feeling a little vulnerable."

'I can imagine,' Sophie agreed. 'Have you tried smells? Sometimes they bring back very strong memories. You can take my essential oils if you like, and try a few drops of one on a handkerchief under your pillow at night to see if that brings up anything.'

Biggles wasn't sure he wanted to 'borrow' Sophie's 'smells'. He couldn't see how a few whiff of an essential oil would bring back memories when the real smells of dope and engine oil did nothing.

He supposed it wouldn't do any harm and it was kind of her to want to help. He was willing to try anything at this point, and so he told her.

Biggles stayed a little longer. He thought Sophie was giving off rather mixed signals and he wasn't sure whether she wanted him to stay or go. Then he wondered if someone wanted Sophie to make him stay but she herself didn't. Biggles decided to go home, but that he would kiss her goodnight where a watcher might see and that should make all involved happy.

Outside the front door was the obvious place, he decided If the watchers happened to be MI5 then so much the better. Let them wonder for a while.

Sophie tried quite hard to make Biggles stay longer but he insisted on going. On the doorstep he turned, cupped her face with his hand and thanked her for the night before leaning in to meet her lips with his own.

As Biggles walked home, mulling over the situation, he had another flash of memory. This time it was from WW2, and concerned perfume with the side-affect of ... then he lost the track. What he did remember prompted him to make another note to ask Algy a question or three, and ask for the essential oils in Sophie's mixture to be tested.

Cautiously, in the safety of his bedroom, Biggles sniffed the essential oil blend Sophie had given him. It had a herby smell, pleasant and rather like the herb omelette he had had recently in a French restaurant. Impulsively, Biggles splashed a few drops on his hanky and pushed it under his pillow.

Rather to Biggles's surprise, he did recover some memories. All of eating omelettes in France which had been cooked with the mixture of herbs in Sophie's essential oil.

No, he could remember who had been there with him and snatches of conversation; odd jokes and stories about acqaintances. Biggles settled down to pursue these fragments and use them as stepping stones to others.

He did, finally, remember to make some notes on what he had discovered, before settling down again. He did need to get in some more sleep before the others woke him up in the morning.

Le Coq an Vin. Biggles had remembered the name of the cafe he had visited so often by morning. That was the plus side. The downside was that he could still taste the herb mixture he'd been smelling all night as he ate his marmalade and toast.

He rather thought a trip to Paris was in order, and said as much to Algy, Bertie, and Ginger, when they came to breakfast.
"For goodness sake stop that Yankee drawl, or you'll have us all doing it before you've finished."
"OK baby - sorry - I mean, righto."
"That's better."

He had flipped through the attractions of Paris on his phone and thought the Folies Bergere lobby looked familiar. Had he been there often? he asked Algy.

Biggles looked at the picture on his phone again. It was an old one of the lobby, World War One in date. 'It does look very familiar ,' he said doubtfully. 'And it makes me think of playing cards.'
