Algy thought that an excellent idea. Henry scurried off to see the housekeeper and organise suitable largesse.

Ginger crept back in and looked around the room cautiously. Algy laughed. "It's all right. She's packing. Going to London to shake up a couple of newspaper moguls."

Ginger hadn't yet looked at any news or social media. Algy enlightened him.

'They called her what?' Ginger asked, awed.

Algy repeated it.
"What will your father say?" Ginger wanted to know.

'He won't be happy she's in the newspapers,' Algy grinned. 'Especially not for this. He might make my mother rein in her activities for a bit.'

'Refuse to pay her bills, for a start. Refuse to accompany her to the places where she wants a husband's escort. Moan at her. Life's hideous when they're at outs, but ones as bad as the other,' Algy said candidly.

"I guess you won't be going back to Merioneth any time soon then," Ginger said, matter of factly. Henry noticed that Ginger didn't say 'going home'.

'Not this decade, if I can help it,' Algy agreed. He spotted Henry.

'Great. Just what I need. Is there enough for Ginger, too?'

"Of course." Henry set the tray onto the table. "There will be dinner at eight. Gimlet says it's informal so no need to change. Oh and your mother wants you to tell Biggles that she wanted a word with him so that she..." Henry screwed up her nose in thought for a second and repeated verbatim "can bring home to him once and for all how disgracefully he has led my son astray."

'That's the long lecture,' Algy said knowledgeably. 'I'll tell him but I don't think he'll turn up for it. He'll say that he's a bit busy at the moment.'

"Which means you'll have to pass the message on," Henry said immediately. "because Biggles is hardly likely to go and see her to say he can't see her, can he?"

'Sadly true,' groaned Algy, pulling himself painfully to his feet. 'No, on second thoughts, I'll have my scones first and tell her that I couldn't find him.'

Unfortunately, Biggles and Gimlet walked in at that moment. "You'll have to tell her a porkie then," Henry grinned at Algy as she shot out of the door to get more refreshments.

Biggles grinned when he heard that Lady Lacey wanted to give him a good dressing down.

'She might, but the four amigos have offered her a lift back to London and they're leaving in five minutes. I've come to fetch you to wave her off. Where's Henry gone?'

“To get more tea and cakes,” Algy replied, struggling to his feet. “Ginger, run and fetch her, if you will.”

A beaming party stood on the steps to wave off their uninvited visitors, Biggles having carefully positioned himself in the middle of the group where Algy's mother would find it hardest to buttonhole him.

Lady Lacey kissed her son on both cheeks and told him she’d have a nice girl lined up for him soon. “It really is time you settled down, Algernon. Although how you expect to get a decent girl when your cousin drags you into so many dreadful situations, I don’t know.” Her eyes flashed around the group and homed in on Biggles, who was trying to make himself smaller.

Henry was enduring instructions from her father, about not driving too fast and not trusting men.

Both of which she ignored.
"For goodness sake stop that Yankee drawl, or you'll have us all doing it before you've finished."

Finally the car disappeared down the driveway. Algy looked at his watch. “They’re not going to get to London tonight.”

They returned to their tea and scones.

'I think I'm finished up here,' Biggles announced. 'Gaskin's got the murderers and the financiers in hand. The Press have gone away to bother other people. I better get back to where I should be. Now, your sick leave's been a bit interrupted, Algy, old chap. I suggest, if Henry is available and willing, that you carry on where you left off and continue your investigations into the best places for cream teas. What do you think?'

“I think it’s an excellent idea,” enthused Algy. “There’s a cafe in Cumbria I want to check out. Scones as big as teapots, apparently.”

Henry started googling the Tourist Information for Cumbrian towns.

'How about we stay near Carlisle tomorrow ....'

'You sort it,' Algy said lazily. 'You know what I like. I'm going to finish my book.'

Henry nodded and began to make notes on her phone from the pages open on her tablet.

They looked like an old married couple, Biggles thought, amused. And as long as they didn't stumble over any more dead bodies, he thought they'd both enjoy the rest of their holiday and Algy would return fit for light duties in the office. He congratulated himself on having arranged it.

The end
