Biggles buys a euphorbia

Biggles buys a euphorbia

Postby gigs64 » 07 Sep 2014, 07:57

This was on my blog http://catescapologist.wordpress.com/

The cold April sun shone down onto the floor of Biggles’ apartment in Mount Street. Biggles sat in an easy chair, reading ‘The Gardening Weekly’.

“I say old bean,” chuckled Algy, whilst polishing his glass eye,” What to pilots want with gardens?” Biggles put down the paper and stared at him.

” Well, you know Von Stalien. He has found a house after our adventures in Russia and has invited us to come over to his place.”

” And what the deuce has a gardening paper got to do with it?”

“Well, I thought that he might like a gift and has he has just moved in without furniture, his house might be a bit bare. Thus the gift of a plant.”

“What kind of plant?” put in Ginger.

” I think a Euphorbia Marginata would look good.” answered Biggles, “anyway, lets go to his house first.’

"Don't be ridiculous Biggles" replied Algy scornfully. "Euphorbia Marginata is an annual grown from seed. Do you seriously think von Stalhein is going to sow seeds, water them, thin them out, then pot up a nice one for the house…? Anyway," he continued, "you can count me out. I'm having nothing to do with that frozen-faced Prussian. If you want to buy him a housewarming present, take Ginger - he likes shopping."

Biggles looked at him coldly. "And why are you polishing that glass eye? I thought you said you were going to throw it away if your uncle left it to you in his will?"

'The kitten is teething with it,' replied Algy, 'and it's much better for her than that packet of cigarettes you left lying about. I suppose if you really want to give him a plant you can have one of the Euphorbia Milii I propagated last year. They're on my bedroom windowsill.'
'Major Bigglesworth' said Von Stalhein coldly, 'there are times when I seriously wonder if you were created by the devil just to annoy me.'

"OK" Biggles got up, got the plant and its pot and called out.

"See you later chaps." and left.

Sighing, Algy went to get the dustpan and brush. 'I'll re-pot it this afternoon. Go and get another. And don't drop this one. Especially not on purpose because you heard the upstairs neighbour come in and you wanted to give him a fright.'

There was a smothered 'ouch' as Algy picked up the plant, in preparation for repotting later.

He bent to pick up the remains of the pot. As he did so, his fingers closed around something in the soil. Something hard and metallic.

What is it? Algy wondered.
"Where the dickens did you spring from?" he inquired.
"Oh, I was just hanging around, you know, in case I was wanted," returned Algy lightly.

Mad King George or the Prince Regent? Algy wondered which Mrs Symes thought she was most directly related to. Was she a FitzHerbert? He held out his hand for the locket. 'How fascinating. May I?'

He looked at the miniature portrait inside the locket. Beautifully painted, he thought it could be a Cosway or a Robertson. The portrait was of a gentleman, not the Prince Regent, but it might have been one of his brothers. But how did it get into the plant pot in the first place?

"Well, Ducks" murmured Mrs Symes confidentially, "there are some that say I take after my great great great grandmother. I was quite a looker in my young day, you know. In fact, when I was a girl in 1917, I even did some intelligence work in Germany, seducing young officers to give up their secrets"
Ally was thunderstruck. He assumed that she had taken out her curlers at the time, but clearly the years had not been kind to her.
Mrs Symes sighed wistfully. "There was one lovely boy. Erich, his name was..."
