Algy at the cake making demonstration

Biggles turned to Prunella. "Care to come with me?" He really wanted her as far away from Gaskin as possible.

'I need to supervise this,' Prunella answered, 'but thanks.'

Liberty stepped forward. "You should go, Prunella. Inspector Bigglesworth doesn't have the right.....equipment to deal with the Manager."

Prunella's lips twitched. 'Oh, I think he does,' she purred.

The manager came hurrying up. "You'd best go now," he urged. "I 've orders to ground all traffic effective in - er five minutes?"

'Make sure everybody is in. I'm waiting for no one,' Biggles ordered.
He thanked the manager, who wrung his hand with gratitude, and then, hearing the engines being run up, climbed into the cockpit.
'Out!' he said to Prunella, who was at his controls, and when she smiled at him, he picked her up bodily and dropped her behind his seat.
He could hear small arms fire as the rebels approached, and he ignored the scuffle he could hear in the cockpit as he concentrated on taking off and gaining height. He didn't know what weapons the rebels had.

Algy dropped into the seat beside him. "Phew, that was hot," he murmured.

'Keep your eyes peeled' requested Biggles. 'I don't know if they've any air capability and this is a lumbering pantechnicon to throw around. I'd rather dodge them if I can'

A small voice piped up, "Uncle Lorry, did you hear that bang? That was my bestest!"

'Can we clear this cockpit,' Biggles requested. 'Just in case I need to throw her around a bit.'

Algy went to make sure everyone was seated and strapped in. There was another small scuffle for his seat between Ginger and Prunella. Prunella won.

Biggles didn't have time to play referee. He looked at Prunella. "Ever been in combat before? No? Then sit tight and do nothing,"

Prunella was sharp eyed, spotting the other plane almost as quickly as Biggles. He edged round into the sun and continued scanning the skies.

Prunella identified it as the regular Intercontinental airliner following its usual timetable.

Algy stuck his head in. "Bandits at 6 o'clock and closing."
Biggles turned to Prunella. "Let Algy have the seat. I have no time to tell you what to do."

'They just want to say goodbye,' Prunella replied serenely. 'It will be better if they see me here.'

This indeed proved to be the case. Prunella waved and smiled, then chatted happily to them over the radio. The planes escorted them to the boundary of the country, rolled in salute then turned back.

Biggles was directed to land at a little-known airfield where the VIP parents could greet their children privately. He was glad of the Minister of Education's presence as it absolved him of all responsibility. As far as he was concerned, he'd completed his mission when he landed the school on home soil.

Passing through into the airport building after making all the arrangements for his plane, Biggles was surprised to see many of the parents waiting for him with their daughters. He was even more surprised when they shook him warmly by the hand and thanked him for all he had done. Most surprising (and worrying of all) was the sudden complete and total transformation of the Sixth Form into beautifully polite and mannered young ladies, who thanked him most charmingly.

'What was that about?' he asked Algy and Bertie afterwards.
'Major Bigglesworth' said Von Stalhein coldly, 'there are times when I seriously wonder if you were created by the devil just to annoy me.'

"Search me," Biggles said, shrugging. "The female sex is a complete mystery to me." He looked at Algy. "Even your cake-making demonstrations can be dangerous. Millicent Miller was not what she seemed."

'We've still got to get Ginger a birthday cake,' Algy said reflectively. 'How about we just ask Mrs Symes as usual.'

Biggles agreed. 'I think I've had enough of the fairer sex to last me quite a while. Fancy the Aero Club or the Drones?'

And in the safety of the Drones, which let no member of the female race through its august doors, ever, Biggles and his friends were finally able to relax and recover from their traumatic experiences.

The End

Excellent. Well done, all.
