666 -Movie Stars

Toddy had, of course, been aware of the tension between Biggles and the film crew but needed updating on Frank and Matt's extra curricular activities. He agreed that a neutral party needed to discover them in the Village Hall but was unsure whether an ARP Warden was their best bet.

'They tend to be quite broadminded because of what they see in the blackout,' he explained.
'Major Bigglesworth' said Von Stalhein coldly, 'there are times when I seriously wonder if you were created by the devil just to annoy me.'

"A pity," sighed Biggles. "That would have been the easiest."

'We need to have several witnesses who will demand an investigation,' Biggles re-iterated in frustration. 'The vicar, the police and the Captain of the Home Guard would do nicely.'

"Well, how about a suspected German spy?" Toddy suggested.

'That would do,' shrugged Biggles, 'but to be honest I think all that needs to be said is that we thought we saw someone behaving suspiciously and breaking into the village hall. It's how to ensure a big enough response...how to get the right people to check and find them.'

"Not a spy, then, a German paratrooper." said Toddy. "If your er....informant was to say he thought it looked like a German then you'd definitely get the home guard and the police. The vicar would come too because the church owns the hall. In fact, what could be more natural than to ring them?"

'They wouldn't be able to tell he was a paratrooper at night,' worried Biggles. 'Who will be our informant? They'll have to use the call box in the village. We can't go through the switchboard.'

The three of them sat for awhile, thinking it over. Then there were signs that Bertie and Angus were winding up the exercise, so they broke the meeting up, each promising to give the problem their careful consideration.

Finally Biggles worked out what to do.

The first step would be to prime everyone that he thought he'd seen someone sneaking around the village hall late the other night when he was innocently on his way home. He would tell them that he'd had a quick look around and not seen anything, but maybe an eye should be kept on the place?

Then, when his informer rang to say that he'd seen a paratrooper or a light, or whatever reason they chose, his witnesses would be more likely to turn out.

He mustn't be too alarming when he spoke to them. He didn't want security tightened so much that Frank Matt and the WAAF couldn't use the place.

But when would Frank, Matt and the WAAF go again? Would Frank want one more apparently easy job before he left here to go somewhere else? That gave him another thought. He asked Toddy to check discreetly whether or not the WAAF had either put in a request for a transfer with the Queen Bee or had been heard to be talking about one.

She hadn't put in for a transfer. Biggles supposed that she could always use her leave to pop over to wherever Frank and Matt were. Or maybe there was a saturation point for each model: only so many pictures could be taken of each before the market grew weary of their charms.

That was besides the point, Biggles thought. Now, if he went down to the Sale of Work at the village hall this afternoon, that would be the perfect time to casually mention he thought he might have seen someone lurking to the vicar.

This was done. There were a few squadron members there too, mainly WAAFs. Biggles saw the vicar over by the tea urn and wandered over.

Biggles and the vicar exchanged the usual platitudes about the war, the blackout, rationing and so on, then, when there were no WAAFs in the vicinity, Biggles mentioned that he thought he'd seen someone around the village hall late one night but had been unable to find anyone when he'd looked closer.

The vicar clucked his tongue and said that the good ladies of the Mothers' Union had thought things a little disarranged the other day. Biggles suggested that he might like the Home Guard and the ARP Wardens to keep more of an eye on the hall, and was gratified to see the vicar immediate excuse himself to raise the matter with them.

Biggles was well satisfied with the outcome of his strategy. He wandered back to the camp thinking he should perhaps interact with Frank again, maybe rub him up the wrong way again to allay suspicion.

He wondered what he should do with the knitted toilet roll cover in the shape of a doll that the vicar's wife had made him purchase. Perhaps there would be a raffle soon that he could donate it to.

Or maybe Klinger could wear it, he mused. He decided to leave it lying around to see what happened to it.

In the meantime he had a constant unobtrusive watch on Frank and Matt, whom he'd taken care to rile up. Algy had been forced to leave his cigarette case at the pub so he had a reason for going out late to collect it.

Finally his watcher reported that Matt and Frank had left the camp surreptitiously.

Biggles's allies swung into action.

Biggles sent Smyth to discover if the WAAF was in her quarters. How he did it he didn't want to know . Smyth was then to go surreptitiously along to the village hall to see if they were engaged there. Algy was sent to the pub to recover his cigarette case and on the way home, in passing by the village hall, see something suspicious and phone the vicar.

His hope then was that the vicar would phone the police and or the Home Guard. After that, well, that would depend on who got there first.

Smyth confirmed the presence of Frank, Matt and the WAAF in the village hall. Algy took a deep breath, looked at the village hall for the benefit of any observers and went to ring the vicar.

Coming out of the phone box, Algy was delighted to see the Captain of the Home Guard walking up the street in the company of a police inspector and the local bank manager. He informed them that he thought someone was behaving suspiciously around the village hall, and followed in their wake as they went to investigate.

The plan worked a treat.
Algy wondered who was more shocked.

Biggles was summoned and he turned up, along with a WAAF sergeant. A very red-faced and indignant vicar told him what was going on in no uncertain terms. The police Inspector wanted to cart Frank and Matt off to the local lock-up, who tried to protest they had done nothing wrong and appealed to Biggles. He shrugged his shoulders. Explanations would have to wait until morning, he said.

The WAAF was escorted back to camp by the WAAF sergeant, accompanied by a grim Biggles and Algy, who was trying not to laugh.

Matt and Frank's various other films came to light. There had been more going on than even Biggles had been aware of. It appeared that perhaps they had been in the pay of a foreign power.

All their film was promptly confiscated by some top brass. Anything salvageable would be patched together in an editing room. Biggles was informed that there was a remote possibility that some other film-makers might contact him to fill in any gaps in the footage.

The appropriate authorities escorted the film crew and the unfortunate WAAF away from Rawlham.

Biggles rose, closed his ledger, and turned to Algy, who had been grinning unashamedly for the past hour.

"And that's that, I suppose," remarked Biggles philosophically, as the last van pulled round the corner and out of sight.

(The End?)
