Biggles and the Magic Hat

Re: Biggles and the Magic Hat

Megan fetched the small valise Biggles kept his overnight kit in and began to fill it.
She put in Algy's nearly full bottle of aftershave, Biggles's propelling pencil, a scribbling pad of paper, a box of matches, a packet of cigarettes and Bertie's spotted silk handkerchief.
There was still room left.
'Major Bigglesworth' said Von Stalhein coldly, 'there are times when I seriously wonder if you were created by the devil just to annoy me.'

"What are you doing?" Biggles asked curiously.

'Establishing the boundaries of the gift giving,' Megan explained. 'When it's full, it's time to go.'

She turned to the summoning circle and summoned three bars of flavoured dark chocolate, adding them to the valise.

'Algy,' she sighed, 'You're the man who couldn't give the hat directions to your flat. Do you really think you could learn to visualise exactly enough to summon something.'

'That was a failure of concept not visualisation,' Algy told her loftily.

They prowled round the flat looking for other gifts. Bertie contributed a manicure set; Ginger added his petrol lighter, showing Hecate how it worked and throwing in spare flints and a can of petrol.

Biggles thought a bit and disappeared into his bedroom, coming out again with a small mirror.

The mirror was a great success. They added the wax candles they kept in case there was a powercut, a jar of coffee and a tablet of scented toilet soap.

Biggles's valise was nearly full now.

Hecate watched these proceedings with interest. A National Geographical book elicited a great deal of excitement. Hecate made it clear she had never seen such clear pictures. What sort of paints could produce such colours?

A magnifying glass was also of great interest. Megan summoned a bottle of nail varnish and painted Hecate's nails, then a hairbrush and brushed her hair. Both of these items found favour with the goddess. A packet of playing cards, and the valise was full.

"How about my harmonica?" Ginger asked.

"No," chorused everyone present.

Ginger looked hurt.
"For goodness sake stop that Yankee drawl, or you'll have us all doing it before you've finished."
"OK baby - sorry - I mean, righto."
"That's better."

'Actually, yes,' Biggles said hastily, vistas of a harmonica free existence opening up in front of him. He put it in before Ginger could change his mind.

The airmen nodded.

'Just a minute,' Biggles said. 'The hat feels wistful.'

He took it off and presented it back to Hecate with a little bow.

'Let's just say goodbye,' suggested Biggles. 'I don't want anyone looking closely at an oath or a release and finding some way of making it mean something else. Words are tricky things.'

"I'm not sure who would be looking at it," Megan replied, "as it wouldn't be written down. But if you hold her to an oath she would be bound by it for all time. If you don't say anything, it leaves it open for her to come back in supplication. And she might, when she runs out of coffee and nail varnish."

Ginger found a Flake left over from his Christmas selection box which he had been saving. Hecate closed her eyes as she savoured every last crumb. When she opened them it was the moment when twilight becomes night.

'It's time,' said Megan.

Megan closed her eyes and began a low intonation. To the airmen it was incomprehensible but to Hecate and the hat it had an unusual effect.

They shimmered, and became a little translucent. Biggles saw with fascination that he could no longer see his fireplace but a whirling, shimmering mist through which another land could be seen.

Hecate said something which made Megan sniff, and stepped forward into full visibility. She touched Biggles lightly on the forehead, then Bertie, then Algy. She looked at Ginger and turned away, stepping back towards the mist.
