If planes weren't the answer, then maybe he needed to make a reconnaissance from a small boat. He went to talk to Smyth about practicalities.

It took them some time but by the end of the day Smyth and Ginger had somehow managed to get a small workable motor for the makeshift boat. Smyth and Bertie took it for trials.

His plan was simple. He was going to take the boat to the vicinity of where the signals were going haywire, cut the power and row until he was close enough to see what was going on. He supposed he'd have to take Bertie to handle the craft, but everyone else was to stay in reserve.
