Saving Ginger

Fairblue thought she heard Kismet mutter about it being a pity it wasn't Ginger, but she couldn't be sure.

Tiff nudged her. "Remember something's different here. America's still not in the war."
Tiff was struck by a sudden thought. What if things were so different that parents or grandparents didn't meet? Would some of us not exist?

Kismet reached across and pinched Tiff's arm.

'Did you feel that?' she asked.

Tiff nodded.

'Then your grandparents did whatever they should have done and you exist.'
'Major Bigglesworth' said Von Stalhein coldly, 'there are times when I seriously wonder if you were created by the devil just to annoy me.'

Biggles watched this by play with interest. "Time to have a chat, I think, ladies," he said, indicating that they were to follow him.
They met Toddy on the way who was rushing out with a signal in his hand and a peculiar look on his face.

Biggles read it and turned to Kylie.

"America is in the mix," he said in a peculiar voice. "This is what you were so upset about last night, isn't it."

She nodded. "But at least we know we are in the correct universe," she commented. "My parents are born on schedule then, and I exist."
"For goodness sake stop that Yankee drawl, or you'll have us all doing it before you've finished."

Kismet's eyes narrowed. If Biggles was a fictional character in her time, then was Biggles about to tell them that they were fictional characters in his time? Or something else. He had the manner of a man who was going to say something he wasn't sure how they'd react to, she thought.

"You said it was time for a chat. What is it that you have to tell us?" urged Fred. "Go on, spit it out."
"Where the dickens did you spring from?" he inquired.
"Oh, I was just hanging around, you know, in case I was wanted," returned Algy lightly.

Biggles looked a trifle taken aback by this.

"I was rather hoping you could provide me with certain... pieces of information," he said.

"We probably shouldn't tell you too much, you know, just in case we alter the whole course of the world," Kylie said earnestly. "We might just write ourselves out of the story, and that wouldn't do."

Biggles looked at each of them in turn. "When we er...visit places," he started "it has always been quite brief. But this time it's different. I feel it and Algy does too. We don't know why. And we have never, ever brought anyone back with us. Until now." He paused. "We think you were meant to come back. For a reason."

"How long does the war actually go for?"
"1945. Hitler dies and many of the Nazi bigwigs escape to South America."

'What reason?' asked Kismet. 'We can give you information but I don't see how it will help you. Knowing the war ends in 1945 doesn't get you to 1945 any faster. You've still got to live through 1943 and 1944.'

"Yes, that's true" Biggles conceded. "But it's nice to know there is an end to it." He stood up and strolled over to the window where he stood, hands in pockets, for a while . "I haven't been able to tell my men but you -well," he turned round again, a look of strain on his face. "There's something going on, in the East. Hong Kong is pretty important to us. What happens?"

"It's not going to make any difference, really," Fairblue said. "The Japanese advance is too organised." She turned to Biggles. "Hong Kong will fall, on Christmas Day. Singapore too, in the New Year. What do you intend to do with the information?"

A smile played across Fred's face. "Maybe Biggles is just trying to make us feel important because he's secretly very fond of us and he wants us to stay here," she suggested saucily, almost sarcastically.
"Where the dickens did you spring from?" he inquired.
"Oh, I was just hanging around, you know, in case I was wanted," returned Algy lightly.

An hour and quite a few compromises later they were having a cup of tea in the Mess when Alice walked in, bundles under her arm. Fairblue resolved to leave her makeup permanently in the Hut with a note so if they did go back suddenly at least these WAAFS would get something out of it all.

Kismet had requested something to embroider as she liked having her hands busy and she couldn't knit. She had no idea what she'd do with a traycloth when she finished it, but she expected she could give it to someone.
She settled down happily to plan her work and to consider what Biggles had said. She rather thought there was still more he hadn't mentioned. He had been entirely too happy to see them right along, she thought.

Fairblue was a bit concerned because she really didn't seem to have any real practical skills that would be of use to the squadron. Not like Tiff who could work in the garden. Fairblue hated worms along with spiders.
