Biggles' Bentley is Stolen

Biggles' Bentley is Stolen

Postby Fairblue » 31 Jul 2015, 21:00

Biggles walked into his office in the Operations Room and looked angrily at Ginger, who was doing some filing.
"I thought I told you to park the Bentley outside the hangar? Where is it? I need it. Raymond wants to see me straight away."

Ginger turned to look at him. "But I did. Ask Smyth. He saw me and told me to tell you it looks as if you've got an oil leak and he'll look at it when he's got a minute sometime next week."

""Well, it's not there now."

There was a chuckle from the corner where Bertie sat. "Looks like some thieving little blighter's made off with it, old boy!"

Biggles thought guiltily of his habit of leaving the keys in the ignition and what the insurance company was going to say, and went to see if anyone had seen anything.

"Maybe one of the apprentice boys took it for a joyride," Ginger suggested.

Biggles ' expression told Ginger exactly what would happen to said apprentice if that was indeed the case.

None of the apprentices had taken it for a joyride, moved it to wash it or seen anyone else do so.

Biggles began to feel embarrassed. How could his car be stolen in front of so many witnesses?

After a couple of hours of fruitless searching and asking questions he decided he'd better 'fess up to the insurance company. But first, he'd have a word With Gaskin.

Gaskin arranged for all officers to be notified of the stolen vehicle and asked to look out for it and Biggles hoped for a lengthy trip to Timbuktu whilst the hilarity of him having his car stolen from supposedly secure premises died down at the Yard.

But it wasn't to be. The phone rang. Biggles answered it and turned various shades between red, pale and sickly hue, not necessarily in that order.

His Bentley, he was informed, had been used in a smash and grab at a jewellers in Covent Garden.

More people than the insurance company were going to be annoyed that he'd left the keys in the ignition, Biggles reflected glumly. He thought a few witty little cartoons would be drawn and located onto the Staff noticeboard at his expense very shortly.

But a sudden thought occurred to him. Ginger had parked the car there.

"Where are the keys, Ginger?" he asked in a deceptively mild manner.

"Here," Ginger brought a selection of them out of his pocket. There was the key to the flat, the hanger, the office, but no car key. Where it should have been was a damaged and distorted ring and a thread of material.

Biggles glared As if his Bentley being stolen and being used by crooks was bad enough, it looked as though his favourite Snoopy keyring had been damaged as well.

"Something tug? What do you mean by that? Did you catch it on something or was your pocket picked?"
In reality Biggles hoped for a pickpocket. It would let him off the hook with his Insurance company.

'It was that monkey that's been hanging around,' explained Ginger, 'The tame one that there's that argument going on about and is being kept here until things are sorted. They let it out for some exercise most afternoons. It comes across and tugs my trousers to see if I've got any fruit for it.'

'Your expenses, Bigglesworth. They're bringing in a new, flat mileage rate which everyone will get regardless of their actual vehicle. We cannot continue to pay you for using that car which only does about 5 miles to the gallon. You're going to have to get a cheap runaround or a motorbike like everyone else.'

The insurance company asked lots of questions about who was a named driver on his policy and if they had had any accidents recently. Biggles tried desperately to remember how old Ginger actually was, how old he'd told the insurance company he was, and wished he'd said Algy had lost the key.

Biggles mumbled his reply.

'Excuse me sir, but I'm afraid I couldn't hear that,' the voice said at the other end.

Biggles mumbled a little louder.

'Sorry, I'm afraid I still didn't catch that,' said the voice.

'I'm a policeman,' Biggles said very rapidly.

The voice at the other end snorted and tried not to laugh. It wasn't a very successful attempt.
