Biggles Gets His Shots

Biggles Gets His Shots

Postby RAAF Spitfire Girl » 03 Nov 2015, 10:22

Biggles frowned as he looked up from the pile of memos he'd received that morning.

"Algy," he looked at his second in command who was buried behind the latest edition of Flight magazine. "Algy, for goodness sakes listen to me! Dd you know we needed immunisations before we head off on this latest stunt Raymond's dreamed up for us?"

"Immunisations?" Three sets of eyes stared back at Biggles in joint horror.

"As in jolly old needles being stuck in our arms, old top?" Bertie's monocle had fallen from his eye in his agitation and he was frantically searching for it.

"Of course," retorted Biggles with heavy sarcasm. "What other sort of immunisation did you think I meant?"

"But," stammered Algy, "We've been everywhere and no one's ever wanted to stick needles in us before we left before..."

"Why do they want to now?" Asked Ginger.

"New rules," he said laconically. "If we don't get 'em, we don't go anywhere."

He consulted the memo. "It's in line with the current Health and Safety regulations. Apparently, one of the Commissioner's staff was bitten by some sort of midge when on a fact-finding mission to the Highlands of Scotland. He's suing the department because he is now is addicted to haggis and the Highland Fling."

"This is a list of shots we have to get," Biggles tossed the memo over. "There's a slight chance we won't need a couple as some of those we had in the RAF were for life."

Algy was astounded at the list. "Why do I need measles? I had those as a child. And bubonic plague?"

"And what's this? Who do they think we are? Vice?" Algy pointed to one particular line in disgust. "Diphtheria, smallpox, Yellow Fever, Black Water Fever..." He threw the list away. "Is the medical centre having a darts match and using us as practice?"

'Where do we get the shots?' Ginger asked suspiciously, remembering where his penicillin had been injected and how it had felt.

"No, that's true. Our operational requirements mean we are sitting down for hours on end," Biggles mused. "But they'll probably stab us in the arm, in which case, flying might be difficult for a few days. Hmm." And Biggles lit a cigarette thoughtfully.

'All these side effects contradict each other,' he said in disgust. 'I can simultaneously experience weight gain, weight loss, nausea, dizzy spells, headaches, more frequent urination, less frequent urination.... Well, I've got a headache now. I'm off to be a pin cushion and when I come back I'd better not be experiencing any of them.'
