Tarquin was puffing and moving much more slowly after the third lap, but he made it. Biggles congratulated him heartily and, hoping that no one he knew saw him, introduced him to the joy of Burpees.
'Major Bigglesworth' said Von Stalhein coldly, 'there are times when I seriously wonder if you were created by the devil just to annoy me.'

"What's the point of these?" Tarquin puffed after his third. "My legs hurt."

'They will make you strong, Sergeant,' Biggles assured him. 'Now, can you do a press up and then you can have a play on the slide?'

"Slides are for babies," Tarquin declared. "I want to go home now."

Biggles thought he looked tired and agreed. He was a little thug, but very young. They walked slowly back to the house with Biggles spinning tall tales about passersby and local landmarks to entertain Tarquin and keep his flagging footsteps moving homeward.

Tarquin didn't want a bath. Biggles informed him that it wasn't an option.

Biggles ran the bath. 'Supper first,' he ordered, 'so you don't have to wash your face twice. Let's see what goodies your mum has left for us.'

He surveyed the offerings on the table with dismay. He certainly didn't have an argument with the cheese and biscuits she had left him, but what on earth she was doing leaving a bowl of Haribos and a can of coke for Tarquin he couldn't imagine.

He lifted them out of the way. 'Let's save these for breakfast, Sergeant. We need a man sized snack for supper. Would you like a babybel or a cheese string? I'm going to have some Gouda.'

"Cheese makes me throw up," Biggles was informed.

Biggles reached for an apple in the fruit bowl and sliced it up. 'Would you like to share my apple, then?'

"Nah. I'll get a bag of crisps." And Tarquin wandered of in the direction of the pantry.

Biggles tried to think how many e numbers were in crisps. Fewer than brightly coloured sweets, he decided, letting Tarquin take a small packet.

'I like crisp sandwiches,' Biggles said brightly. 'Do you?'

Tarquin looked interested. "Dunno. Never tried them."
