Hut where Biggles found Ginger

Postby Frecks » 03 Aug 2018, 14:32

I am going to make a model of the hut where Biggles found Ginger in Black Peril. Mr. Frecks is going to paint my "spare" Ginger to make him look suitably scruffy and dirty. I would welcome suggestions on how the hut would look and what would be inside it apart from the fire Ginger had made and his cooking "utensils".

Oh, we saw one when we were at Kismet's house last month - and joked about the "disused railway hut." I took a photo, I will try and find it.

On closer inspection of my camera reel, I don't have a good one.

I think maybe Kismet or Fairblue or Tiff also took photos of it? We certainly discussed on our train ride.

That is interesting KK. Was it a wooden structure or built of stone?

Wood, I think. We know Ginger's railway Hut was made of old sleepers, which makes perfect sense, using material left lying around.

Yes that would make sense. I think it was a very low building - certainly it had a low doorway but no door if I remember rightly. I should think it would be quite small.

Found a couple of images online. The huts seem to be very low buildings made of sleepers with a corrugated iron roof just as WEJ described it. I wonder what the huts were used for. Storing tools for track repairs would be one idea or perhaps as a shelter for railway workers in bad weather.

I meant to reply this morning, but was otherwise occupied.

My comment was to be that, to me (without checking!) "Ginger's hut" sounded very like a sleeper built ganger or lengthman's hut, that is built by and for the guys who maintain the track (Permanent Way gang).

Apart from shelter - and a bait cabin - the gang might store a few tools in it. The most likely thing would be the keys. These are slightly tapered oak blocks (not tapered enough to call them wedges) that are used to hold bullhead rail into the chairs that hold the track on the sleepers.
(I can take picture of some in a few days ...)

Something to keep in mind, Frecks, is that the hut will have moss, ivy, or other plants growing all over it.

I had not thought of that KK. I would be very interested in any photos you have Stone Road. Mr. Frecks can make all sorts of bits and pieces from small scraps of wood.

I don't have a photo of the hut, either. I've looked through twice because I was sure I did, but no. Sorry.

I don't have a photo either, I'm afraid, although I do remember the conversation.

It was definitely wood and larger than I thought it might have been, though.
